We agree it does look out of place surrounded by a modern building, however we would prefer that then being knocked down, kudos to that decision. Worth a visit. Read more. Black tower is now surrounded by modern bushings and really looks out of place nice to walk past and see but just part of a medieval building.

The Black Tower is the remains of the walled fortifications of medieval Brussels. From the exterior, the tower looks like something out of a fairytale. It looks amazing with climbers growing up to about halfway to the top of the windows. It also look very photogenic juxtaposed against the much more modern buildings that surrounded it. Cool by itself, but looks silly surrounded by a modern hotel. The Black Tower, the remains of a 13th century city fortification, looks amazing by itself, well preserved for being so old. You can walk around it and get a good view from all sides. You can't go inside tho. But the fact that it is now surrounded by a modern hotel just looks silly. The poor Black Tower is now surrounded on all sides by a hotel, built round it. It's a rather inconveniently located remnant of the city's 13th century fortifications, located just behind St Catherine's church, a short walk away from the Grande Place.
